Is Leptin the real reason you can’t lose weight?

Leptin is a hormone produced and stored by the adipose (fatty) tissue. Its discovery in 1994 led to the field of Fat and thin womanobesity research. One of leptins roles is in regulating the rate of fat breakdown. It is regarded as a sort of ‘watchdog’ hormone that monitors how much fat the body contains and signals to the brain how much energy is available, what to do with it whether one should be hungry, eat and make more fat or burn fat. Other than being one of the leading weight loss advice tips, it has also been shown to be involved in the activity of the immune system.

Leptin and Appetite

Leptin affects areas of the brain that control appetite. Cells in the gut and the hypothalamus portion of the brain secrete neuropeptide Y which is a protein molecule that functions as a neurotransmitter and works by stimulating hunger. Leptin counteracts the effects of neuropeptide Y. If your Leptin signaling is working properly, when your fat stores are “full,” this extra fat will cause a surge in your Leptin level, which signals your brain to stop feeling hungry, to stop eating, to stop storing fat and to start burning some extra fat. Thus the hormone helps to maintain one’s normal weight.

Genetic Leptin deficiency

An absence of this hormone makes the body think it does not have any fat whatsoever and this results in uncontrolled food intake and severe childhood obesity. Those with a genetic Leptin deficiency (i.e. their genes do not produce any Leptin) will react to Leptin treatment by losing significant amounts of weight.

Weight Loss Advice – Leptin resistance, a core factor in obesity

Obesity is a major risk factor for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and many other chronic diseases. Interestingly, obese individuals have been found to have high Leptin levels however these do not induce the expected loss in fat mass which suggests that obese individuals may be resistant to the effects of Leptin as administering the hormone to obese individuals does not induce weight loss as predicted. The pathway of Leptin control in obese people might be flawed at some point, so the body does not adequately receive the satiety feeling subsequent to eating.

It is thought that Leptin resistant occurs in a similar way that insulin-resistant does by continuous overexposure to high levels of the hormone. There are a number of proposed molecular mechanisms used to describe the phenomenon of Leptin resistance. These encompass a spectrum of molecular and functional disorders, which can broadly be characterized into 1) an impaired Leptin transport across the blood–brain barrier and 2) an impairment of receptor function and signaling. Furthermore, compelling evidence suggests that Leptin itself may play an important role in the development of resistance to its own effects, so called “Leptin-induced Leptin resistance.” This is where raised levels that characterize obesity decrease the transport of Leptin into the central nervous system and impair the signaling properties of Leptin receptors. The resulting resistance to Leptin confers increased susceptibility to diet-induced obesity, which in turn raises Leptin levels further and worsens existing Leptin resistance leading to a vicious cycle of weight gain:

  • Eat more, gain body fat.
  • More body fat means more Leptin in fat cells.
  • Too much fat means that proper Leptin signaling is disrupted.
  • The brain thinks you’re starving, which makes you want to eat more.
  • You get fatter and hungrier.
  • You eat more. Gain more fat and so and so forth.

Leptin diet

To reestablish proper Leptin signaling the diet must be involved. There are however foods and supplements that can help to increase one’s Leptin sensitivity. High carbohydrate foods that contain simple starches like white flour and potatoes, along with highly processed foods containing sugar and high-fructose corn syrup;  contribute to decreased Leptin sensitivity. What about Ghrelin?

Ghrelin is a hormone that was discovered seven years after Leptin and is produced and released mainly by the stomach. Like Leptin, it acts on the hypothalamus but increases appetite rather than decreases it. For this reason ghrelin is often termed the ‘hunger hormone’ because it stimulates increased food intake and promotes fat storage. Levels of ghrelin increase when fasting and are lower in individuals with a higher body weight compared to lean individuals, which suggests ghrelin could be involved in the long-term regulation of body weight.
