Weight Loss Advice – The Alkaline Diet

Could changing to an alkaline diet help you lose weight?

Here we explore one of the leading bits of weight loss advice on Healthy Happy Slim. The many health benefits of having a less acid and more alkaline diet have been known for over a hundred years, here we revisit the reasons why changing to an alkaline diet can improve your health and protect you from many diseases including cancer.

The alkaline diet was first expounded by William Howard Hay, a doctor in New YorkThe acid- alkaline diet
in 1907. He believed that acid accumulation in the body contributed to weight gain,
tiredness and some chronic conditions. He wasn’t wrong as it seems today’s society
is more acidic than ever! Most foods we eat, after being digested,  and metabolized, release either an acid or an alkaline base into the blood.
Our bodies contain about 42 litres of liquid and the natural state of that liquid is
alkaline. While our stomachs need to be highly acidic (around pH 1.5–2.5) for
digestion the optimum pH of all other fluids in our bodies should be around 7.4 for
good health.

Which foods are acidic forming?

Grains, fish, meat, poultry, shellfish, cheese, milk, and salt all produce acid as does
sugar, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), bleached white breads and pastries. The
result of an excessively acidic system is tiredness, lethargy, migraines and very often
excess weight, as the body also dumps excess acid into body tissues as fat. In turn,
this weakened state makes one more vulnerable to multiple health problems,
including poor digestion, fatigue, arthritis and osteoporosis. If there are too many
acid-forming foods in the diet, the body must use a base to neutralize the acid. Your
bones are the largest deposits of alkaline material in the body. Furthermore acidic
foods generally lack fiber, which helps control blood sugar and improves bowel
health. The friendly bacteria in the gut need fiber to function. Without them the
digestive system and the immune defenses can suffer.alkaline selection

Foods that break down as base-forming compounds include fruits and vegetables.
Fats fall under the neutral category. When the body is in a healthy, alkaline
pH-balanced state, there is a feeling of vitality and well-being because the body is in
an optimal state of cellular function. An alkaline diet would be beneficial to all women
as it appears to help conserve calcium and benefits muscle, heart and bone function.

To maintain a healthy system, an alkaline diet should consist of 80 per cent
alkaline-forming foods colorful vegetables, leafy greens, fruits, moderate amounts of
proteins and lots of water with lemon and/or lime is the healthiest diet to follow and
similar to the Mediterranean diet. Supplementing with green powdered drinks, that
consist of various alkalinizing grasses such as wheat grass and barley grass are
helpful in boosting pH. The remaining 20 per cent of the diet can come from the
protein rich acid-forming foods. Table 1 shows a list of acid and alkaline foods that
can help you attain optimum health.

Alkaline diet and Cancer

In 1931, Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for his work on cancer, in which he
demonstrated the ability of cancer cells to thrive in conditions of high acidity and low
oxygen with normal cells unable to survive. At the same time, those same cancer
cells were unable to survive in conditions of alkalinity and high oxygen, while normal
cells were able to thrive in these conditions. Warburg wrote extensively about
the internal oxygen environment of the body and its relationship to the pH and
behavior of cancer cells.

Top Nutrition Tips For An Alkaline Diet

Aim for 80/20 That’s 80 per cent alkaline-forming foods and 20 per cent acid
forming. On your plate there should be a small portion of protein, such as meat,
chicken, fish or pulses, a small portion of grains, such as brown rice or sweet potato,
and the rest piled high with vegetables.

There are so many ways you can increase the alkaline forming foods in your diet every day. Try adding lemon to food and your water. Most people think citrus fruits are acid
forming, but in terms of the action they have on your system, lemons and limes are
alkaline-forming so add to food regularly.

Drinking at least eight glasses a day is the cornerstone of alkalizing as it helpswheatgrass juice in shot glass
flush excess acid from the system. Squeeze some lemon or lime to further alkalize
water.

Cut back on these acidifying foods: Caffeinated drinks, chocolate, sweets,
processed food including cakes and takeaways, soft drinks, refined carbohydrates
and fatty meats, alcohol and hard cheeses.

Relax and sleep well: Stress and poor sleep contribute to lower pH or acidity. So
deep breathing exercises yoga, tai chi and relaxation strategies should be
incorporated into one’s day-to-day life to help one manage the stresses of fast paced
busy lives. The benefits of having an alkaline diet are numerous so now you know, what are you waiting for?
